Abstract

[Also in Group XXIX] In a fluid flow indicator comprising a tube 3 of non-magnetic, non-conductive material through which the fluid flows in an upward direction, a solenoid coil 2 surrounding at least the lower portion of the tube and connectable in an alternating current indicating and/or signalling circuit 10-20 (Fig. 2), and a piston 1 of magnetic material freely slidable in the tube to vary the impedance of the coil in accordance with the position of the piston 1 in relation to the coil 2, the piston 1 is in the form of a hollow cylinder which is open at its upper end and in the region of its lower end is closed or is closed except for a metering orifice 14 provided .at that end and the cylindrical wall of the piston is formed with one or more longitudinal slots extending from the open end towards the opposite end. The coil 2 is provided with an outer casing 5 of soft steelsheet. Liquid flowing upwards through the tube 3 raises the piston 1 in the tube, thus decreasing the impedance in the coil 2. The coil is connected in series with a coil of a suitable relay 12 in a circuit supplied by a low alternating voltage E. The fall in impedance at the coil 2 results in an increase in current and voltage at the relay coil which closes the current circuit 10-20. If liquid ceases to flow, the piston sinks, the impedance increases, current and voltage in the relay coil are decreased and the current circuit 10-20 is consequently interrupted and will thus indicate the cessation of flow.
