Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a ball recirculated type steering gear system with variable gear ratio, in which tooth profile of tapered sector gear is shaped in the same form with that of the rack to be meshed, whereby breakage of tooth tip can be prevented and smooth mesh between the sector gear and rack can be attained.
CONSTITUTION: Ball nut 4 is threaded with ball screw 2 formed in steering shaft 1 by the intermediary of balls 3, and toothed rack 6 formed in the ball nut 4 and tapered sector gear 8 formed integrally with sector shaft 7 are held in mesh with each other and supported in gear box 5. In generating the gear 8 by means of a gear cutting tool in the same form as the rack 6, gear cutting is conducted with its generating angle being kept smaller than the maximum swing angle of the same, and the tooth surface 8b" at the tip of side teeth 8b located on opposite sides of center tooth 8a is shaped in the same form as that of the mating tooth of rack 6
