Abstract

918,673. Blanket cylinders. VICKERS ARMSTRONG (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Feb. 28, 1961 [March 8, 1960], No. 8159/60. Class 100 (2). Top and under blankets 12 and 11 are secured around an impression cylinder 10 by tensioning rollers 23, 24 disposed within the cylinder in association with a rotatable clamping bar 15 and a longitudinal cylinder slot 13. The rollers are corrugated in order to grip the ends of the top blanket 12 whilst the ends of the under blanket 11 are gripped respectively between the surface of the bar 15 and an inner surface of the cylinder and the surface of the bar 15 and a wall of the slot 13. Inwardly protruding pins 31 disposed along the cylinder assist the clamping of the blanket ends between the bar and the cylinder whilst to prevent undesirable flexing of the rollers they are cradled in arcuate shoes 28, 29 suitably spaced longitudinally of the cylinder. The rollers are rotated from a worm-wheel 26 through meshing gears 27 whilst rotation of the bar 15 is effected between two limiting positions regulated by a stop 21 by a lever which is attached to the squared end of the bar. The bar has a longitudinal slot through which the ends of the blanket 12 are passed after the under blanket 11 has been securedly attached to the cylinder by the bar. The latter is chamfered to provide faces 17 and 18 such that the blanket end to be secured between the bar and the cylinder may be easily inserted before being gripped on rotation of the bar. If the cylinder is intended for unidirectional rotation only one face 17 or 18 is necessary. More than one cylinder slot 13 with associated rollers and bar may be provided, in which case each slot would accommodate the ends of blankets which are adjacent one another around the cylinder.
