Abstract

A polyolefin wax (other than polypropylene) having a viscosity between 50 centipoises (at 120 DEG C.) and 30,000 centipoises (at 140 DEG C.) is oxidized in the molten state at a temperature up to 200 DEG C. with oxygen, air, nitric oxides or mixtures thereof, the viscosity of the reaction mixture and product being controlled by the use of low reaction temperature, the exclusion of catalysts or by control of the quantity of oxygen introduced, so that the viscosity does not substantially exceed that of the starting material. High or low pressure polymers or copolymers of ethylene and/or butylene \sB propylene (and thermally decomposed if necessary) may be used as the starting material. Specified oxidation catalysts are ozone, organic peroxides and heavy metal stearates. The products find application as cleaning compositions, e.g. floor and shoe polishes, in conjunction with ingredients selected from montan wax ester, metal soap, paraffin, white spirit, oil of turpentine, oleic acid, morpholin and water.
