Abstract

Oxidation products of high molecular weight solid and semi-solid polymers and interpolymers obtained at high temperatures and pressures from ethylene alone or mixed with other organic compounds containing one or more double bonds and capable of forming dimers or higher polymers, e.g. those made as described in Specifications 471,590, 497,643, 578,584 and 8070/40 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) are made by contacting the polymers or interpolymers with air or other oxidizing agents at an elevated temperature not exceeding 250 DEG C. Oxidation may be effected (1) by heating the molten polymer in air on mixing rolls at temperatures between 140 DEG and 250 DEG C.; (2) by heating the polymer with aqueous nitric acid at 70 DEG to 130 DEG C.; (3) by bubbling a mixture of oxygen and ozone through a solution of the polymer in carbon tetrachloride at 70 DEG to 78 DEG C. or in a mixture of carbon tetrachloride and hexachlorethane at temperatures up to 100 DEG C.; (4) by exposing thin films of the polymer to air or other oxidizing agents at 60 DEG to 250 DEG C.or in powder form at 60 DEG to 110 DEG C. Oxidation may be accelerated by ultraviolet light or catalyst, e.g. tetrahydronaphthalene, ammonium vandate, turpentine, benzaldehyde and fatty acid or naphthenic acid salts of cobalt, lead and manganese. Alternative oxidizing agents specified are hydrogen, benzoyl, and diethyl peroxides, ammonium persulphates, sodium hypochlorite, potassium chlorate, chromic acid, potassium permanganate. Mixtures of nitric and chromic acids and peroxides formed in situ, e.g. tetrahydronaphthalene peroxide formed in the presence of air in a solution of the polymer. The products may be hard waxes which may be used in polishes, coating compositions, for moulding and electrical insulations, or soft waxes or greases which may be used for making cyclic ketones and lactones for perfumes and long chain esters or amides and in the preparation of water-repellents and rust inhibitors. The process may be carried out batch-wise or continuously.
