In a wrapping machine of the type having means for marginally sealing together top and bottom webs to enclose articles fed in succession on to the bottom web and crimping and cutting dies for sealing and separating individual packages, the marginal sealing mechanism includes, at each side of the machine, top and bottom heated blocks 24, 25 defining between them opposed gaps 29 in which the edges of the webs 15, 16, Fig. 3, are superposed, and pairs of co-operating sealing rollers 30 for sealing the edges after they leave the gaps -29 Each pair of blocks 24, 25 and its associated sealing rollers 30 are urged together by springs 47. The machine is adjustable to accommodate articles of different height and width and the heating and sealing units 24, 25, 30 can be swung about a vertical axis to splay them thereby stretching the wrapping material tightly over the articles. The machine, which is primarily intended for wrapping flat articles, has solenoid actuated means for separating the heating blocks when the machine stops. The transfer means between the marginal sealing mechanism and the crimping and cutting rollers comprises top and bottom belts 33, 34, Fig. 1, the unit as a whole together with the sealing mechanism 11 being pivoted at 66 to enable the conveyer end adjacent the cutting and crimping dies 13 to be set at the required height. The upper belt 33 is pivotable about its end adjacent the cutting and crimping dies so as to. provide access to the machine, and its spacing from the belt 34 may be varied to accommodate articles of different thickness. The infeed conveyer 10 is interchangeable according to the type of article being wrapped. When packing articles such as sliced meat which should not be subjected to sliding motion, a conveyer of the kind described in Specification 887,470 may be used. When the articles are suitable for sliding, a conveyer may be used which comprises a belt having conveying lugs upstanding between article support rails.
