Abstract

917,135. Reciprocating pumps. TYLER, T. B. June 12, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1961], No. 21063/61. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] In a hand-actuated sprayer an inlet valve 17 is held open by a spring 19 so that discharge cannot occur unless the pressure developed in a pumping chamber 32 exceeds a predetermined value. Clearance 37 is provided around valve 17 to permit return flow while low pressure exists in pumping chamber 32. Above the predetermined pressure, produced by sufficiently rapid actuation of a trigger 11, valve 17 is forced on to its seat and delivery valve 29 is opened against spring 30. A nozzle 23 (see Group XXIX) is adjustable to produce variations in delivery from a mist to a jet. Movement of trigger 11 is limited by projections 43 and 44. A filter 20 is provided beneath inlet valve 17. Clearance 37 and the top of valve 17 are dimensioned such that air may be pumped when priming the sprayer. Embodiments are described for use with long-necked, as shown, and short-necked containers and a remote reservoir. The components are of plastics, e.g. polyethylene.
