Abstract

Porous ceramic material is produced by impregnating a self-supporting porous matrix body, which is composed of material capable of being removed by heat, with a powdered ceramic material or with a powdered mixture of ingredients which will produce a ceramic material on heating, and firing the impregnated matrix body to remove the matrix material, to cause said mixture if present to react to form a ceramic material, and to sinter the ceramic particles together. The porous matrices mentioned are expanded cellulose and foamed synthetic organic polymeric material such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and polyurethane. Composite ceramic bodies may be prepared incorporating one or more porous components and one or more components formed of a dense ceramic material. The ceramic powder utilized in the example consists mostly of alumina with small quantities of precipitated chalk, calcium fluoride, magnesium hydroxide and bentonite. Porous porcelain may also be made by this process.
