Abstract

916,165. Winding thread. REINERS, W. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 24, 1958], No. 5903/59. Class 120 (2). In a thread winding machine of the kind comprising a plurality of winding stations and a single automatic fault eliminating device, each winding station is provided with a timemeasuring device which, relatively to a reference time, measures the fault-repairing time during which said station has been rendered inoperative, the device being operable to remove said station from the control of the fault eliminating device if the ratio of the measured fault repairing time to the reference time exceeds a predetermined value. In the embodiment shown a winding station comprises spool frame 3 pivoted to frame 1 and carrying package 2 which rests on traverse drum 4, the thread F being wound from a cop K. Beneath drum 4 is a trip lever 5 pivoted at 6 and having a lug 8 and a depending tail 5<SP>1</SP>. A tension spring 7 urges lever 5 such that lug 8 abuts a bi-metallic strip 9 having a heating coil 10 in an electric circuit 19. Tail 5<SP>1</SP> of lever 5 is co-operable with arm 11 of a three-armed lever pivoted at 13, the second arm being thread feeler 12 and the third arm 14 being co-operable with an arm 15 pivotally mounted on a tender 16 which travels successively past the winding stations, actuation of arm 15 operating automatic fault eliminating means such as tying of broken ends, replacing an exhausted cop 5 by a full one or removing a completed package 2. The arm 12 of the three-armed lever also has secured thereto a contact 17 which co-operates with a contact 18 in circuit 19. If a fault occurs at a winding station, feeler 12 moves to the chain-dotted position so that arm 14 moves into the path of arm 15 on tender 16. Simultaneously contacts 17, 18 are closed so that bi-metallic strip 9 becomes heated. If on actuation of arm 15 the fault eliminating operation is successful, contacts 17, 18 will be opened and bi-metallic strip 9 will cool down. If the fault elimination operation is unsuccessful the bi-metallic strip continues to be heated until it is sufficiently deformed to become disengaged from lug 8. When this occurs lever 5 rocks so that tail 5<SP>1</SP> engages arm 11 and returns the three-armed lever to the full line position. Arm 14 is removed from the path of lever 15 such that no further fault eliminating operation will be initiated. when tender 16 passes the winding station. A warning device may be incorporated to indicate to an operator that the winding station is inoperative. The arrangement is such that the bi-metallic strip will not be deformed sufficiently to disengage from lug 8 at least until sufficient time has elapsed for the operation of the fault eliminating means and preferably, two or even several such operations, to take place as the tender passes.
