Abstract

757,475. Winding webs. METALMECCANICA SOC. R.L. Nov. 18, 1954, No. 33408/54. Class 100 (1). An automatic and continuously operating winding machine for webs of fabric, paper, thermoplastic and the like comprises two roll-driving rollers 5, 9, a magazine for rollcores 18 to be filled, means for freeing the cores one at a time and for leading them to a first winding station Y in engagement with the first roller 5, the said means being actuated to allow a new core to enter the first winding station by the partly wound roll as it passes to the second roller 9. When the roll is fully wound a knife cuts the tensioned web between the rollers 5, 9 and attaches the end to the empty roll-core now in the first winding station. The parallel side frames 1 of the machine are each formed with guide slots along which the ends of the roll spindles can slide. The first slots 17 slope downwardly and serve as the magazine for the roll-cores 18 which are retained in place by a lever 13. Cores released from the magazine slide down to the winding station Y resting on the driving roller 5. The web is passed round this roller and attached to the core. As the winding proceeds the size of the roll increases thereby causing the spindle ends to rise up the slot 7. When they reach the point a they slide under gravity down the slot 8 to the point b so that the outer surface of the roll rests on the second driving roller 9. As the spindle ends move down the slot 8 they actuate cam-shaped extensions of levers 12, 13 controlling the empty cores in the magazine so that lever 12 is first rotated against a spring to engage and hold the next-to-end core in the magazine and lever 13 is rotated against a spring to release the end core which slides down to the first winding station Y. The winding of the partly wound roll continues in contact with roller 9, the spindle ends rising up slots 10 and the web being maintained in a state of tension between rollers 5 and 9. When the roll reaches a predetermined size, its surface 21 bears on an arm 22 and actuates an electric switch adapted to operate a knife blade 23 and fingers 25 which take the severed end and attach it to the new core as shown in dotted lines. The process then repeats automatically.
