Abstract

915,740. Cutting-glass. PITTSBURGH PLATE GLASS CO. Feb. 27, 1961 [March 1, 1960; March 4, 1960], No. 7054/61. Class 56. Scored glass sheets are snapped as they move from a feeding conveyer to a receiving conveyer by a snapping roller movable into contact with the sheets from below while other rollers bear on them from above on either side of the snapping roller. In the form shown the sheet G passes over rollers 12, a snapping roller 13 and under rollers 25. The bearings for the ends of the rollers 25 are vertically adjustable by screws 26, the two screws at opposite sides of the machine carrying worm wheels simultaneously operable by worms rotatable by hand wheels 54. The brackets carrying the bearings are slidable, by grooved end portions 33, 34, along a girder 43 under the action of pinions 51 rotatable by hand wheels 52 and engaging racks 53. A bolt 84 interconnects pulleys on the shafts of the rollers 25, a pulley 73, a pulley 79 movable under the action of an air cylinder 75 to tension the belt, and a pulley 74 driven by a motor through a belt 83. The snapping roller 13 is eccentrically mounted to rotate on a stationary shaft 14 and can be moved upwards into contact with the glass by partial rotation of the shaft by an air cylinder 56. Discs 114, 115 carry tuning cams 117 to operate switches 4LS or 5LS one of which is selected to control the control of the valve which feeds air to the cylinder. The discs are driven from one of the rollers 12 through sprocket chain 94 and 112, a reduction gear 91 and an electromagnetic clutch operated by a switch 1LS engaged by the leading edge of the glass, starting from an initial position determined by the opening of a switch 3LS by a cam 108. This timing mechanism is identical to that described in Specification 915,919. In another embodiment the rollers 25 are carried from gantries which run on guides on the base members 19, longitudinal movement being produced by rack-and-pinion mechanism at either side, interconnected by shafting carried across the gantry.
