Abstract

Linear aromatic polyester (including polycarbonate) textile materials are dyed with an aqueous dispersion of an anthraquinone dyestuff of the formula:- <FORM:0915484/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents a bromine atom, an alkoxy group having 1-8 carbon atoms, a b -methoxyethoxy group or a b -ethoxyethoxy group and R represents a monocyclic aryl nucleus of the benzene series devoid of water-solubilising groups. Dyeing may be effected in the presence of carriers, and, if desired, under pressure. 1-Amino-2-bromo-4-arylsulphonamidoanthraquinone is prepared by reacting 1-amino-2:4-dibromoanthraquinone with a benzene sulphonamide in the presence of potassium acetate, copper acetate and an inert solvent such as amyl alcohol. Dyestuffs in which X is an alkoxy, a b -methoxyethoxy or a b -ethoxyethoxy group are prepared from the corresponding 2-bromo compounds by treatment with metallic sodium in the appropriate alcohol, or they may be prepared by reacting 1 - amino - 4 - bromoanthraquinone-2-sodium sulphonate with a benzenesulphonamide in the presence of potassium acetate or carbonate and a copper catalyst and then treating with potassium hydroxide in the appropriate alcohol.
