Abstract

Textile materials or films of linear aromatic polyesters are dyed or printed from an aqueous medium with a dyestuff, e.g. an azo, nitro or anthraquinone dyestuff but not an o-hydroxy-azo dyestuff, which is free from aromatically bound sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups but which contains at least one group -SO2-CH=CH2. As an alternative, a dyestuff containing a -SO2-CH2-CH2-X group in which X represents a halogen atom or a -O-SO3H group may be employed but in this case the latter group is converted in the aqueous medium into a vinyl sulphone group by treatment with a weakly alkaline reagent such as soap, sodium acetate, secondary sodium phosphate, sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate. The aqueous medium preferably contains an anionic, cationic or non-ionic dispersing agent. Dyeing may be effected at temperatures above 100 DEG C., or at about 100 DEG C. in the presence of a carrier such as chlorobenzene. Printing pastes preferably contain accelerators such as b -naphthol-diglycol ether.
