Abstract

914,315. Grinding. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. June 12, 1959 [June 13, 1958], No. 20224/59. Class 60. A rotary driving pad for use with rotative abrasive elements has a resilient face member 16 having a large number of individual blocking resilient protuberances 11 adapted to grip and propel a flexible, conformable, fluid-permeable abrasive element while forcing the abrasive element against substantially all portions of an irregularly planar work surface, the outermost extremities of the protuberances lying in substantially the same plane, the protuberances being defined by interconnected channels 12, at least a substantial number of the channels terminating at the outer edges of the face member, the channels permitting detritus to be accumulated therein and expelled centrifugally therethrough. The face member may be of natural or synthetic rubber or may be cut from conveyer belting having a three-ply cloth reinforced rubber back and an integrallymoulded rubber working face. The face member 16 is adhered to a resilient backing member 14 of material substantially softer than that of the face member. The backing member 14 may be of sponge rubber or foamed polyurethane; it may be omitted. The pad is attached by screws 13 to a support member 17, having a clamp 18 for attachment to a cement floor-cleaning machine. The support member 17 may be of laminated wood to which the pad is secured by rubber. Alternatively, the pad may be cemented to an aluminium hub. For treating floors, the pad drives a steel wool pad, an abrasive included three-dimensional skeletal fibrous nylon disc or an open mesh woven coated abrasive fabric disc; detergent solution is used. For treating a steel panel coated with oven-dried pigmented lacquer-type surfacer material the pad drives an open mesh cloth abrasive disc.
