Abstract

[Also in Groups XXVI and XXXV] In a device for transmitting rotary motion between a shaft 31<SP>1</SP> and a surrounding ring 33 through a sealed and normally non-rotatable tubular wall 25<SP>1</SP>, the interior of the ring and exterior of the shaft are of substantially elliptical cross-section so that rotation of, say, the ring 33 causes a progressive deformation of the tube 25<SP>1</SP> which in turn acts upon the shaft 31<SP>1</SP> to rotate it at the same speed as the ring 33. Ballbearings may, as shown, be interposed between the tube 25<SP>1</SP> and shaft 311, and between the tube 251 and ring 33, the outer race of the inner bearing and the inner race of the outer bearing undergoing the same deformations as the tube 25<SP>1</SP>. As shown, the ring 33 comprises the rotor of a squirrel-cage electric motor and the shaft 31<SP>1</SP> is hollow to form the inlet for a centrifugal pump whose vanes 35 discharge into an outlet 36. In a modification the device is used in the drive between a squirrel-cage electric motor and the helical propeller blades of an axial flow pump. The tube 25<SP>1</SP> and other parts of the device may be of metal such as steel or bronze, or of other material-for example, the tube 25<SP>1</SP> may be of polytetrafluorethylene, polyethylene, rubber or synthetic rubber.
