A heat-exchanger such as an economizer, superheater or evaporator, has longitudinallygrooved tubes coiled in coaxial helices, Fig. 5, the pitch of the helices being varied by movement of a support 27 on a tie-rod 25 (bearing a deflector core 24) so that the angle of fluid-flow to groove, and therefore the heat-exchange rate, can be varied. The tubes may be arranged in parallel layers which may be staggered, Fig. 3 (not shown). A heat-exchanger may have a mixture of finned and finless tubes. In Fig. 4, the tubes 13, over which a fluid flows transversely, have longitudinal grooves 16, which may vary in depth and width according to their position on the tubes or on longitudinal fins 14 which may be provided. The fins may be tangential, as shown, or diametral and they may be hollow. The whole surface of a tube or fin need not be grooved. The grooves may be of rectangular, triangular or trapezoidal section and separated by a rounded ridge. The depth is about 1 millimetre. There may be transverse grooves also, producing a checkered pattern, and there may be internal grooves. The tubes may be of circular, oval or square section.
