905,076. Tubular heat-exchangers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. July 6, 1959 [July 7, 1958], No. 21770/58. Class 64 (3). In a heat-exchanger consisting of a bank of staggered tube limbs 12-17 formed by tubes, each of which consists of at least two of the limbs united by a return bend, the limbs, e.g. 14, 16 and 15, 17, of alternate tubes (see Fig. 2), are spaced apart by distances less than the external diameters of the tube limbs and the tubes at locations where neighbouring tubes cross one another, which in the embodiment shown is in the region of the return bends, are formed e.g. of an elliptical cross-section, to permit such spacing of the tube limbs. The tubes may be formed by welding suitablyformed return bends to the ends of separately formed tube limbs. Alternatively a sinuous tube may be deformed at the bends to the desired dimensions by heat and pressure. Extended heating surface in the form of continuous helical fins or projecting studs may be provided on the tube limbs. Specification 865,427 is referred to.
