Abstract
913,798. Magnetic recording-heads. ITEK CORPORATION. April 12, 1961 [April 12, 1960], No. 13128/61. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XIX] Film or other records 20, Fig. 1, which are to be held in a stack, as shown in Fig. 2, are identified by data magnetically recorded on a marginal strip 21 in such a way that a field is produced external to the edge of the record for detection by a sensing-head 25 moved across the edges of the records. The recording may be made as shown in Fig. 4, by a head 32 having a conductive insert 38 in the gap. The winding 39 is connected to a condenser 43 first charged by a battery 45 and then discharged through the winding. According to the polarity of the current flow the recording on the strip 21 may have a north or a south pole on the outer edge. Eddy currents induced in the insert 38 serve to oppose the build-up of magnetic flux across the gap of the recording head so that it takes the path of smaller resistance through the magnetic material of the strip 21. Other ways of achieving this, are described (Figs. 6, 7, not shown), using saturation of a part of the magnetic core of the head. The sensing head is of conventional construction, there being a separate core 25A, Fig. 3, for each bit position.
