Abstract

913,652. Valves. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 8, 1959 [June 18, 1958], No. 19543/58. Class 135. The oval-shaped body 1 of a hinged disc-valve has apertures to one side of its minor axis to which pipes 2 are bolted, the inner faces around the apertures forming seats 3. In the body is an operating shaft 5 on which an arm 8 is mounted; the disc being made up of two parallel plates 7, and two flexible discs 9, the outer peripheries of which are secured to the inner face of the adjacent plate, and the discs having centre openings, the edges of which are connected around the edges of an opening 10 in the arm 8 whereby the whole forms an enclosure which may be expanded into contact with the seats 3 by admitting pressure air thereinto or contracted by evacuating the enclosure via a pipe 12 connected to a pump, not shown. Stops may be used to limit the movement of the disc. The free end of the arm 8 carries a roller 16a which runs between the body flanges. Contraction of the enclosure and hence unseating of the plates 7 is assisted by springs disposed between the plates and around the periphery of the latter; the springs may be secured to the plates by screws or by hooks formed on the extremities of the plates. The valve is opened by swinging the disc to the other side of the body either manually or by a pneumatic jack pivoted to the body and connected by linkage 19 to the shaft 5. Electric switches are provided to control a circuit that signals the open or closed position of the valve; a vacuum gauge is fitted to the pipe 12 and a gauge is connected to the interior of the enclosure and the difference between the readings of these gauges shows whether the plates are seated or not; connections may be provided on the gauge unions to enable leakage testing to be undertaken. Sealing rings are disposed in the seats 3 or plates 7 and the valve may be operated dry and free from lubricant.
