Abstract
Pulverized iron is purified by contacting it with pulverized metallic calcium in an inert gas atmosphere and thereafter separating the iron from the calcium. 10 kgs. of iron ground to 250 to 300 mesh are reacted in a platinum-plated iron receptacle with 3 kgs. of 200 mesh calcium for 24 hours under an atmosphere of argon, the mixture being stirred every two hours. The reaction may be carried out at ambient temperatures or 20 DEG to 30 DEG C. above. When the reaction is completed the iron and calcium may be separated by elutriation.
