Class 7(5) The invention relates to mechanism for starting internal-combustion engines such starting mechanism being of the kind which includes a rotatable pinion 11 which is axially movable through the intermediary of a solenoid 20 from a rest position towards or into engagement with a gear wheel 12 (such as a toothed flywheel) secured on or drivingly connected to the engine crankshaft, the solenoid being arranged at or towards the end of its travel to close a pair of contacts which serve to energise an electric motor and apply a torque to the rotatable pinion for the purpose of rotating the engine. The invention comprises an engine starting mechanism of the above kind wherein a member movable by the solenoid is connected to one end of a first lever 16 so as to be adapted to rotate the first lever about a fixed pivot 18 on which it is pivotably mounted, there being provided in addition a second lever 17 which is also pivotally mounted on the fixed pivot and which is connected to the rotatable pinion in such a way that pivotal movement of the second lever will be accompanied by axial movement of the rotatable pinion, the first and second levers being interconnected by resilient means 22, 23 whereby rotation of the first lever in either direction will apply a rotational force to the second lever. The shaft 13 is provided with helical splines (not shown) which engage with a helical thread formed in the interior of part of the drive unit 10. When the shaft 13 rotates after the pinion has moved into mesh with the flywheel the screwing action imparted to the pinion 11 will cause a further slight axial advance of the drive unit so that the lever 17 moves slightly relative to the first lever 16 and thereby tensions the torsion spring 23.
