Abstract
Sodium bicarbonate or sodium sesquicarbonate is crystallized from an aqueous solution in the presence of 5 to 800 ppm. of an anionic active surface active agent (surfactant), the surfactant being an alkyl benzene or alkyl naphthalene sulphonate in which the alkyl carbon atoms total at least four, an N-organic substituted taurate of formula R1R11NCH2CH2SO3M where R1 is a hydrocarbon radical, M is an alkali metal, and R11 is a fatty acid group of at least 8 carbon atoms, or a primary alcohol sulphate containing at least 8 carbon atoms. For the crystallization of the sesquicarbonate the preferred surfactant concentration is 5-20 ppm., while for the bicarbonate 40-400 ppm. is preferred. A large number of surfactants are exemplified, those in the specific examples being dodecyl benzene sodium sulphonate, butyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium-N-methyl-N-oleyl taurate, and sodium-N-cyclohexyl-N-palmityl taurate. Specification 30170/48 open to inspection under Section 91.
