Abstract
Allyl cellulose prepared according to Specification 831,969, and having a degree of substitution of from 0,1 to 1 allyl group per anhydroglucose unit, is grafted by an unsaturated monomer, grafting being effected by polymerization in the mass or in a solution, suspension or emulsion of the unsaturated monomer. A polymerization catalyst (e.g. a peroxide or persalt) may be added to the monomer, or the allyl cellulose may be soaked with the monomer without the addition of polymerization catalyst, the resulting mass being then subjected to infra-red, visible, or ultra-violet radiation. Alternatively, the allyl cellulose may be pre-treated with an oxygenated reagent, e.g. oxygen, ozone or an organic peroxide, as in Specification 912,279, or the monomer may be partially polymerized and subsequently contacted with the allyl cellulose. The allyl cellulose may be the allyl derivative of a natural cellulose material, e.g. ramie, jute, hemp, flax, sisal or wood fibre, or of an artificial cellulose material, e.g. regenerated cellulose, or of a cellulose ester or ether. All unsaturated monomers except dienic compounds may be grafted on the allyl cellulose. Specified monomers include vinyl halides, e.g. vinyl chloride and vinyl fluoride, styrene, a -methyl styrene, b -methyl styrene, chlorinated styrenes, vinyltoluene, acrylic monomers, e.g. acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and their derivatives, e.g. esters, amides and nitriles, monoolefins, e.g. isobutylene, ethylene, and propylene, vinylidene chloride, fluoride and cyanide, allyl monomers, e.g. allyl chloride, acetate and phthalate, unsaturated ketones, e.g. methylvinylketone and methylisopropylene ketone, nitrogenous monomers, e.g. vinyl-pyridine and vinyl-pyrrolidone, vinyl acetate and vinyl chloroacetate, and vinylsilane. Cellulose fibres of reduced combustibility may be obtained by grafting with chlorinated monomers.
