Abstract

A highly stable latex is prepared by polymerizing in aqueous emulsion a predetermined amount of vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride in the presence of a predetermined proportion of a previously prepared latex made by the aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomeric material comprising predominantly vinyl chloride and/or vinylidene chloride and containing a known number of polymer particles of known dimensions, whereby the average diameter of the polymer particles is increased to between 500 and 20,000, preferably 500 and 3000 Angstrom units. The monomeric materials may include minor amounts of other copolymerizable compounds such as vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate, methyl acrylate, methacrylate and ethacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, phenyl acrylate, ethylene diacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene; maleic acid or anhydride and esters of maleic acid and of chloromaleic acid. The amount of seed latex employed is usually between 0.05 and 50 per cent of the total finished latex. Polymerization may be batch or continuous, using the usual dispersing agents and peroxy catalysts and, if desired, buffers. Excess dispersing agent, producing new particles of small size, is avoided. A latex produced by the above process may be used as a seed latex in a subsequent polymerization, and the polymer present in the seed need not be identical with that present in the final latex, although within the above class.
