Abstract

911,112. Bearings. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1960 [Feb. 9, 1959], No. 4476/59. Class 12 (1). A flexible supporting arrangement for a rotating shaft 10 comprises a journal bearing sleeve 11 connected to a diaphragm 12, and a thrust bearing 16, 20, the member 16 being secured to the shaft by a nut 18 locked by a plate 19, and the member 20 being secured to a second diaphragm 22. A cover 27 secured to the member 20 has a conical bore 29 in a boss 28, into which is soldered a wire cable 30, the opposite end of which is similarly secured in a bush 32 located in a fixed plate 33 by a nut 35. The cable 30 accommodates any slight tilting of the shaft, and it can be tensioned by the adjusting nut 32 to support the whole, or the major part of the load A acting on the shaft. In a modification the shaft is instead supported at its opposite end and the cable 30 is replaced by an adjustable strut.
