Abstract

910,896. Ventilating vehicles. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. May 2, 1961 [May 10, 1960], No. 16492/60. Class 137. [Also in Group XIII] In a vehicle propelled by a diesel engine 11, a valve 19 allows some or all of the air to be tapped from the exhaust 17 of engine supercharger 13 to serve as the working fluid in a refrigerating system for the passenger compartment 12. As shown, the air passes in series through heat exchanger 21 (heating air in duct 22), expansion turbine 26, and exchanger 30 (cooling air in duct 31). Heating or cooling of the compartment 12 is determined by the positions of flap valves 24, 33 adapted to connect the ducts 22, 31 to the compartment or to ambient. The amount of conditioning air is determined by the position of butterfly valves 23, 32 at the duct inlets. Valve 19 may be automatically controlled. The exhaust air from the supercharger may be cooled upstream of valve 19. Turbine 26 may drive an alternator 28 or an additional engine supercharger.
