[Also in Group XX] A type-composing machine comprises a memory in which a complete line is stored before it is actually composed and counters for counting the length of the line as it is inscribed in the memory and comparing it to the desired justification length, and when an interword space appears in the line after the length of the line has reached a value for which it can be justified, as determined by the counters and comparison circuits, inscribing of the line in the memory is interrupted, the line justified and sent to the composing unit and the interword space cancelled. The machine is controlled from a coded tape and is provided with a storage memory for the length of line and number of interword spaces, and two counters, whereby an electric circuit arrangement, one relay is energized when the line has reached the minimum length for justification, and a second relay is energized when the line has reached within five characters of its maximum length for justification. Furthermore, special signals called " discretionary hyphens " are introduced by the operator at points where words may be broken. (1) Discretionary hyphen signals occurring before the justification zone is reached, and also within the justification zone but before the energization of the second relay are ignored. (2) If an interword space occurs within the zone before the second relay is energized, the inscribing of the line in the memory is interrupted, the line is justified, and the space is cancelled. (3) If either an interword space or a discretionary hyphen occurs after the second relay is energized and within the justification zone, the line is justified, in which case the width of the hyphen is taken into account. (4) If neither an interword space nor a discretionary hyphen occurs within the justification zone, the tape reader is stopped, a relay is energized which increases the maximum increment by which an interword space can be increased, and which conditions the machine for mixed justification by interword spaces and the spaces between characters in a word, and the last characters of the line are erased one by one until an interword space or a discretionary hyphen is reached, when the line is justified with unusually wide spacing.
