Justifying type; control by record strips.-In. formation relating to characters received from a perforated tape or other means is stored in such a way that a string of characters can be simultaneously examined electrically to determine where said characters can be hyphenated to end a line. In particular, the characters in storage cells on either side of a point of investigation are sensed to determine whether they are vowels or consonants, spaces or punctuation, and further consequent information is obtained from the adjoining characters, which are stepped past said point by a clock pulse device. Certain letter combinations are inserted into the cells as a single code signal. The circuits analyse the character combinations in accordance with hyphenating rules of the English language to determine whether a hyphenating condition exists, in particular when a line has reached justifiable length, the output signals representing a combination of end-of-line, justification, and hyphenating information.
