Abstract

910,632. Extracting taper pins. AMP Inc. Jan. 2, 1961 [Jan. 6, 1960], No. 56/61. Class 61. [Also in Group XXII] A tool for inserting an object, e.g. a taper pin electrical connection, into a receptacle, comprises a body, a member slidable with respect to the body and having means for retaining the object on the member, and means for imparting a force to the member to insert the object into the receptacle, the tool having a further member displaceable with respect to the body against the action of a spring to abut the receptacle to withdraw the object therefrom by relative movement of the retaining means away from the receptacle. The tool has a barrel 2 consisting of three portions 4, 6 and 8 and a handle 3. The barrel accommodates a rod 14 provided with an axial slot 18 and a cavity 20 at its forward end for receiving a taper pin T. The collar 22<SP>1</SP> of the pin is received in a transverse groove 24 in the rod, Fig. 4, and the wire attached to the pin is accommodated in a recess 26. A key 32 slidable in the groove 18 of the rod has lugs 36 and 38 intermediate its ends, the lug 36 being engaged by a spring-loaded bush 42 the forward face of which is bevelled and bears against a plurality of balls 40 which extend into a groove 41 in the rod. The balls prevent relative movement between the rod and the barrel until the balls are cammed radially outwardly. The forward end of the key extends over the cavity 20 to retain the pin in the cavity. The handle 3 and the rear end of the barrel portion 8 contains a spring-loadable impact hammer of the type described in Specification 854,945. In operation, the operator aligns the pin T with the aperture in the receptacle and then pushes the handle forwardly to compress the spring 52 which is later released to drive the hammer against the end of the rod 14 which forces the pin into the receptacle. The tool is released from the pin by pulling the tool handle rearwardly which cams the balls 40 outwardly to allow the barrel to move relatively to the rod 14. The key 32 which holds the pin in the tool moves with the barrel and releases the pin. The tool has a taper pin extracting device which comprises a rearwardly spring-loaded collet 70 surrounding the rod 14 and having a projection 72 terminating rearwardly of the tip of the tool. When the pin T is to be extracted the collet is displaced forwardly by means of a cam 84 rotated by a handle 86 until the collet extension 72 engages the surface of the receptacle whereupon the rod 14 is moved axially away from the receptacle to extract the pin.
