Abstract

909,360. Type-bar-making machines. MERGENTHALER LINOTYPE CO. July 7, 1960 [July 31, 1959], No. 23773/60. Class 100 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] Clamping matrices.-At least one of the vice jaws is controlled by a closed hydraulic mechanism having a continuously operated pump, and there is provided a cylinder and piston device connected to the jaw and a selector valve comprising a valve body and a plunger slidable therein, the plunger having first and second positions in which liquid flow between the pump and the cylinder and piston device is positively prevented and permitted respectively. The jaws 20, 21, Fig. 2, are moved inwardly as required, for quadding or centring by pistons 25, 26, Fig. 12, operated selectively by the pressure of liquid circulated by a pump 41 in a closed system including a container 36 and the conventional slide valve 39a operated from the main camshaft. The system also includes a selector valve 59, Figs. 6 and 12 (see Group XXIX), formed in two similar halves, each half having a plunger 61 or 62 which on depression allows liquid to pass to the jaw-closing side of the corresponding piston 25 or 26. Liquid for opening the jaws by-passes the selector valve. In order to prevent any inward creeping of the jaws during rest or normal operation of the machine, the valve 59 positively prevents liquid flowing to the pistons when the plungers are not depressed. A rod 99 is reciprocated regularly by a cam, and normally causes levers 89, 90 to pivot about rollers 89a, 90a fixed thereto without depressing the plungers. When a " quad right " solenoid 121 or a corresponding " quad left " solenoid is energized, a latch 115 or a latch 116 is moved into the path of the rear end 123 of the lever 89 or the lever 90, which lever is then pivoted about its end 123 to depress the plunger 61 or the plunger 62. The jaw-operating plungers are attached to racks 31, 32 and for centring a solenoid 124 is energized and moves a pinion 33 into engagement with both racks so as to synchronize the movement of the jaws. A solenoid 125 when energized for quadding or centring locks the justification bar 22 by means of a latch 129. The solenoids 124, 125 are controlled by three switches 112 controlled by the plungers 61, 62. The solenoid 125 also limits the upward movement of a rod 132, which during normal operation rotates a sleeve to move the jaw 20 slightly to the right to clamp the justified liner. High and low pressure relief valves 53, 55 are arranged to cause a reduction of jaw pressure after clamping to permit alignment of matrices, and a reduction after casting to allow jaw wiping. The mechanism may be controlled manually, or electrically by push buttons or tape control. Four push buttons are arranged so that any button pressed is locked until released on pressing another button, all buttons being released when a further solenoid is energized. The electrical system includes a memory device, so that before one line is cast, the next line can be composed and a quadding signal entered. Specifications 746,898 and 794,952 are referred to.
