Abstract

908,357. Dowel pins. F.T. PRODUCTS Ltd. Nov. 17, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959; Feb. 29, 1960; April 4, 1960], Nos. 40471/59, 7069/60 and 11864/60. Class 89 (2). In an assembly of a fastener 10 and two members 24, 25 held together thereby, the fastener 10 has a head 13 having means for attaching it to the member 25 and a tail 12 formed with at least one tongue 14 having its free end directed out of the general plane of the tail 12 towards the head 13, the member 24 being formed with an undercut groove opening into an edge of the member 25, the tail 12 being engaged in the groove 26 with the tongue 14 preventing withdrawal. In one form (Fig. 3) the members 24, 25 consist of two flat co-planar panels, the head 13 being co-planar with and similar to the tail 12, tongues 14, 15, 16 and 17 in the head 13 and tail 12 pointing in opposite directions, whereas each panel has a groove 26, 28, the head 13 engaging in the groove in the panel 25 and the tail 12 in the groove in the other panel 24. The edges 22 and 23 may be bent upwardly away from prongs 18, 19 and 20, 21 formed from the bent tongue ends, to facilitate assembly. The members may be two flat panels lying in perpendicular planes with adjacent edges, a fastener 31 (Fig. 5) having a flat head 32 perpendicular to the tail 31 and engaging a face of one panel, the tail 31 being engaged in the groove in the other panel. In another form the members consist of two slotted beadings 44, 45 (Fig. 8) with their ends adjacent at 43 and their longitudinal axes inclined obliquely, the fastener shown at 40 having a head 42 coplanar with and similar to the tail 41, opposed tongues in each being directed parallel with the axes, respectively, the head 42 and the tail 41 engaging in beadings 44, 45. The undercut groove in the member may be of dove-tail crosssection, the tail being of shape and size substantially to fit the groove, which may be shallow and stopped and formed by two overhanging ribs lying one on either side of it. In the form shown in Figs. 10 and 12, to hold panels 55, 56, the head 52 is bent into a plane perpendicular to that of the tail 51 and has a threaded aperture 53, the fastener 50 having one or two stiffening depressions 54. Fig. 13 shows a similar fastener 60 except that prongs 61 and 62 are cut from the edges of the tail 63 instead of from within it. To be able to withdraw any assembled fastener from a groove it is given square-nosed bent spring tongues instead of prongs. The fasteners are mainly for use with panels of synthetic plastic material. The groove may be a rectangular closed or overhanging slot or dove-tailed (Fig. 19). With very thin panels two ribs 70, 71, inclined to one another and stopped short of the panel edge form the overhang of a dove-tail to give a shallower groove.
