Abstract

907,370. Jointing by stamping. AMP Inc. March 2, 1961 [March 9, I960], No. 7638/61. Class 83 (4). A crimping die set for the confined crimping of an electrical connector ferrule on to an electrical conductor includes a crimping die having a crimping recess and a crimping anvil for insertion into the recess to crimp an electrical ferrule on to an electrical conductor therein, the side edges of the crimping face of the anvil being relatively displaceable to abut the side walls of the recess to prevent extrusion of the ferrule material between each edge and the side wall adjacent thereto during crimping. In an embodiment the crimping die 2, Fig. 5, co-operates with an anvil 13<SP>1</SP> having a central longitudinal slot 14 which provides a pair of diverging fingers 15 the ends of which have arcuate crimping surfaces 16. When the anvil enters the die 2 the edges 18 of the fingers abut the walls 6 of the die prior to the application of compressive force to a ferrule 10 and an electrical conductor 12 disposed in the die recess. Extrusion of the ferrule between the edges 18 of the fingers and the die wall is prevented but slight extrusion takes place into the slots 14 of the anvil thus providing a rib 10<SP>1</SP> on the outer surface of the ferrule, Fig. 7. In another embodiment the slot 14<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 9, in the anvil has parallel walls 17<SP>1</SP> and the side edges 18 of the anvil crimping face do not engage the walls 6 of the die. When the ferrule 10 is compressed by the fingers compressive forces urge the fingers apart and into engagement with the die walls to prevent extrusion between the finger edges and the die wall. The fingers may be spring-loaded away from one another in the first embodiment and towards one another in the second embodiment. The anvil may have two slots providing three fingers the centre finger remaining stationary during the crimping operation.
