Abstract

Cyclododecanone is prepared by reacting cyclododecene with a strong acid of 70 to 100% by weight concentration, the amount of acid being such that the weight ratio of cyclododecene to acid is 2 : 1 to 1 : 10, hydrolysing the resulting ester to p cyclododecanol and dehydrogenating the cyclododecanol. The acid, such as sulphuric, phosphoric, formic or trichloracetic acid, is preferably reacted with the olefin at about +5 to -20 DEG C., optionally in the presence of a diluent, the resulting ester hydrolysed by heating at 70-100 DEG C., advantageously first in an alkaline medium then in an acid medium, and the alcohol dehydrogenated over Raney nickel. Examples are given.
