Abstract

906,774. Ink ribbon mechanisms. TELEPRINTER CORPORATION. May 3, 1960 [July 2, 1959], No. 15577/60. Class 100 (4). An ink ribbon mechanism comprises a first spool which attempts to drive a second spool at a higher linear ribbon speed through a frictional slip drive, the first spool being driven by a slow speed reversible motor, the reversing of which is controlled by a switch actuated by a rack arm having ribbon slots which are engaged by the conventional eyelet or like means. A first spool 12 is secured to the shaft 16 of a slow-speed reversible motor 14 and drives a second spool 22 through a friction device F which includes a ratchet-wheel 24. The diameter of the spool 12 when full of ribbon is not greater than the diameter of the empty spool 22 so that when ribbon is being wound on to the spool 22 its linear speed there will be greater than at the spool 12 so that slipping of the friction device F will occur. The ribbon 32 passes through pins 70, 72 of a reversing lever 66, Fig. 2, and when the ribbon on the spool 12 is exhausted the pins 72 are engaged by the usual eyelet which swings over the lever 66 to reverse the drive of the motor 14 by changing over a switch 64. A pawl 30 now engages the ratchet-wheel 24 and holds it against reverse rotation so that with the spool 12 acting as the take-up spool the device F acts as a frictional brake. In a modification, the friction device F is housed in a recess in one spool so that the spools can be mounted closer axially. In a further modification the spools, which may be of a standard pattern, are mounted on separate shafts and a step-up gearing connects them and includes a similar frictional drive device.
