Abstract

905,773. Automatic circuit-breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 11, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959], No. 34844/60. Class 38 (5). In a circuit-breaker the tripping device includes an armature movable to release a trip member; a magnet having a small air gap from the armature sufficient to effect release of the trip member, a current responsive bimetal connected to move the armature, and a stop against which the bimetal is normally stressed so that low overload currents heat the bimetal to first relieve the stress without armature movement and then move the armature so as to release the trip member. As shown in a circuitbreaker otherwise similar to that described with reference to Fig. 9 of Specification 905,772, the trip member 79 (Fig. 1) engages latch surface 85 on the armature 86 having two L-shaped projections 121 which rest on shoulder portions of the bimetal 97 forming a pivotal mounting. The bimetal 97 is secured to a projection 101 of the frame 25 and is acted upon by a compensating bimetal 130. A U-shaped magnet yoke 117 has a projection 129 welded to the bimetal 97 and a spring 119 is supported between the yoke and bimetal to bias the armature 86 counterclockwise against a stop 148 on the trip member 79. The air gap 139 between the yoke 117 and armature 86 is maintained constant under normal load conditions since the bimetal is stressed due to the engagement of a stamped projection 143 of the bimetal 97 with a stop 141 on the trip member 79, and owing to the stop 148 there will be a small gap 144 between a tail 125 of the armature and the end of the bimetal 97. On the occurrance of overload sufficient to relieve the stress in the bimetal and move its end anticlockwise, the gap 144 is closed and the gap 139 enlarged before the armature moves with the bimetal to release the trip member 79. If a constant gap 139 is required the tail 125 may be arranged to engage the bimetal end when the armature engages the stop 148, or alternatively (Fig. 12, not shown), the stop 148 may be omitted. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 7) the armature 86<SP>1</SP> is biased by a U-shaped spring 145 and the constant relative positions of the bimetal 97<SP>1</SP> and trip member 79<SP>1</SP> are determined by the engagement of a projection 147 of the yoke 117<SP>1</SP> and a stop face 149 on the member 79<SP>1</SP>.
