Abstract

832,948. Automatic circuit-breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. April 2, 1958 [April 12, 1957], No. 10583/58. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker having an operating mechanism similar to that of Specification 765,276, has its releasable member 45 retained by a trip member 77 pivoted in the casing at 81 and biased against a stop 92 by a spring 91. A bimetal strip 59 carried by a conductor 29 has fixed to its free end a U-shaped magnetic piece 61 surrounded by an insulated coil 67 in series with the strip 59. The leg 63 of the piece 61 has three projections (Fig. 2), the centre projection 75 being riveted over to secure the piece 61 to the strip 59 and the outer projections 73 forming poles which together with the pole end 65 attract an armature portion 78 of the member 77 to release the member 45 on heavy overload. The member 77 carries a compensating bimetal 95 having an insulating button 97 in engagement with the piece 61, whereby the strip 59 actuates the member 77 to release position on light overloads. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) a U-shaped magnetic piece is supported wholly by and below the bimetal strip, the plane of the U being perpendicular to the axis of the strip.
