905,301. Photo-electric analysis of fluids. SOLVAY ET CIE. March 20, 1961 [March 21, 1960], No. 10041/61. Class 40 (3). Photo-metric analysis apparatus comprises a number of analysis tubes each connected to a separate sample source and a mobile radiation emitter-receiver system inspecting each tube in turn. An infra-red source 4, Figs. 1 and 2, and detector 5 are driven past tubes 6 and 7 by means of screwed rods 2, 3 until contact with a switch 26 causes coupling 9 to be reversed, reversing the travel of the radiation system. Chlorine containing an unknown amount of hydrogen is fed through the reference cell 7 to a furnace where the hydrogen is converted into hydrogen chloride and then into the sample tube 6. The detector is filled with hydrogen chloride or a propane-butadiene mixture and a differential pressure set up therein indicative of the hydrogen chloride in tube 6 is converted into a voltage and indicated or recorded. The cells 6, 7 are connected to individual electrolytic cells and may be arranged horizontally, vertically or in a circle. The movement of the source and detector may be intermittent or continuous, with or without a slowing down for the analyses.
