904,725. Hot air and gas power plant. BUSH, V. April 22, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 14271/60. Class 7(1) [Also in Group XXVI] A power plant comprises a free piston engine including a cylinder, a free piston 16 reciprocable therein, a compression space 20 and a combustion space 18 in the cylinder on the opposite sides of the piston, a compressor 60 for supplying, compressed air to the combustion space, means for introducing the compressed air and fuel into the combustion space for combustion therein, an output motor 30 for receiving and expanding the gaseous combustion products from the combustion space to convert the energy of the products into mechanical work and an air motor 58 for receiving compressed air from the compression space and expanding the compressed air and drive means 62 mechanically interconnects the output motor, the air motor and the compressor for common mechanical operation. As shown there are two opposed pistons in the cylinder but one piston only may be used. For some purposes the combustion and compression chambers could be interchanged but the illustrated arrangement is preferable. The motors 30 and 58 may be turbines. An adjustable restriction 52 may be introduced into the pipe 50. A pipe 76 is connected between the reservoirs 66 and 74 to provide for interchange of air. If interchange is not desired the pipe 76 may be omitted. A common reservoir may be employed in place of the reservoirs 66 and 74. The fuel injector may be timed and controlled in the manner disclosed in Specification 812,420.
