Abstract

[Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A free-piston internal-combustion compressor in which the combustion air supplied to the engine cylinder is pre-compressed and supplied by the delivery of a separate machine connected to the inlet ports of the engine cylinder without the interposition of a compression chamber forming part of the compressor, and in which the said machine yields compressed air at a pressure which is variable: Fig. 1 shows a blower 5 driven by a turbine 6 supplied with exhaust gases from the combustion space 1. An electric motor 38 may be used as an additional drive and its output or valves 34 and 35 may be controlled by the pressure of the delivery in pipe 12. The compressor spaces 11<1>, 11<2> may be supercharged by connection by pipe 15 with the blower 5. The air for the space 1 may be pre-heated at 40 by the exhaust of the turbine 6. The spaces 13 may be used for supercharging the compressor spaces 11<1>, 11<2> and may be controlled by the valve 14<1>. The compressor may be supercharged by using the exhaust of a turbine driven by the compressed air, the tapping pressure being controlled by the pressure of the supercharged combustion air. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement wherein the turbine, 6 is supplied by the delivery of the compressor and the exhaust gases, and besides doing external work, drives a blower 5 for supercharging the combustion air. The exhaust of the turbine 6 is used to heat the inlet of the turbine 6 and the coihbustion air. In a modification the supercharging blower for the compressor is driven by a turbine supplied with exhaust gases and the combustion air is derived from a tapping of the main turbine. Pneumatic energy accumulators 8 are provided for supplying return energy and are supplied with air under a pressure controlled by the pressure of the combustion air and the compressor delivery and the exhaust pressure of the internal-combustion space.
