Abstract

904,266. Expansion joints; indicating leakage. ZALLEA, J. P., and ZALLEA, S., [trading as ZALLEA BROS.]. June 14, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 21545/61. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). In a pipe line expansion joint a bellows element connected at opposite ends thereof to rigid end fittings 40, comprises inner and outer plies 20, 10 substantially in free surface contact with one another to define a fluid penetrable space therebetween, communicating with which space is means for coupling to a device for detecting the presence of fluid in the space. As shown, the ends of the bellows element are welded to the fittings and the outer ply 10 is provided with an aperture 60 in register with which is an opening 70 in a coupling 50. Attached to the latter is a sensing device which operates an alarm to give warning of breakdown of the inner ply of the bellows element. An anti-torsion device 80 prevents relative rotation between the coupling 50 and the fitting 40, and a metal foil cushion is disposed between the plies 10, 20.
