Abstract
1,185,443. Plethysmographs. JARNHS ELEKTRISKA A.B. 28 March, 1968 [30 March, 1967], No. 15068/68. Heading ASK. Plethysmograph apparatus for indicating small volume changes in a part of an extremity 3 comprises a rigid tubular shell 4 having at each end means for sealingly connecting the plethysmograph to the extremity, the sealing means comprising rigid plates 6 partially overlapping each other and adjustably mounted circumferentially to the shell, there being a covering 7 enclosing the plates and connected to the shell, the covering being adapted (e.g. by a tube 8) to be connected to air evacuating means, and there being means for connecting the plethysmograph to indicating instruments. As shown, the covering 7 may be evacuated through the tube 8 so that it bears on the plates 6 so as to seal them against the limb 3 and the small volume changes of the limb are recorded by sensing the differential air pressure across an opening 9 to atmosphere, the opening including an air flow resistance 11 and being connected by tubes 13 to a transducer 12. The electric signal from the transducer is amplified at 14 to provide an indication of the air flow rate and is integrated at 15 to provide an indication of volume change. In a modified apparatus (Figure 2, not shown) a hose (10) extends through the tube 4 and is sealed at its ends to the coverings 7, the hose fitting around the surface of the limb so that a liquid may be used instead of air as the measuring medium.
