A gripping attachment for tape measures having a loop 26, Fig. 4, comprises a baseplate 20, Fig. 5, having a hook 21 with a serrated gripping edge 23, a projection 24 for engaging the loop 26 and members 25 for engaging the measuring tape. An alternative embodiment is shown in Fig. 2.
