Abstract

[Also in Group XXV] The sliding pivots 10, 11, Fig. 3, of a sash 2 sliding downwards in slideways 12, 13, Fig. 2, on the fixed frame 1 on opening the window about a horizontal axis parallel to the top rail, are locked in the closed position from turning about the horizontal axis while the sash can then be turned about pivots 25, 27, Fig. 2, and 30, Fig. 3, 58, Fig. 2, on a vertical axis intermediate the sides of the sash. The slideways 12, 13 have inverted L-grooves for the pivot pins 10, 11 and anticlockwise movement of the sash, as seen in Fig. 3, about the vertical axis from the closed position, is prevented by the end of a pin 23, Figs. 3 and 4, operated by the handle 9 and rack and pinion driven rod 45, 46, 33, Fig. 4, and an eccentric disc 34, projecting beyond a block 24 on the frame 1 and clockwise movement is prevented by the slideways 12, 13. The sash is retained in its open position when swung about its horizontal axis by braces 17, 16, Fig. 2, the lower ends of which pivot about pin 20 on the brace 17 and pin 19 on the main frame side member which pins are located in notches 37 at the ends of corresponding horizontal grooves 21 in the frame member 22 and in the brace 16. The window is fastened as regards movement about a horizontal axis when in its open position about the vertical axis by an inclined part 32, Fig. 4, on the operating rod 33 passing through the pivot pin 30 to move the pin 30 into the bore 58, Fig. 2, in the main frame lower rail. Continued movement of the rod 33 releases the horizontal locking by pin 23 and enables a notch 39 on the rod 33 to ride on an arcuate rail 40 concentric with the pin 30, to effect horizontal locking. A weather frame, whole or in two hinged parts is provided with at least a sealing packing 47, Fig. 5, which is forced into the joints between the sash and frame. Two or more seals may be provided forming air pockets. As an alternative to the notches 37, a rod 50, Fig. 14, forming a parallelogram linkage with the brace operates a locking pawl 56 on rotation of the sash about its horizontal axis to co-operate with a notch in the member 22 to lock or release the brace from the main frame.
