Abstract

In the production of water enriched in heavy water, the water condensed from the products obtained by the gasification of coal (or other solid material containing more than 50% carbon) at elevated temperature is used as the water supply to a known heavy water enriching process, since it is found that this condensed water is already enriched in D. Processes of heavy water enrichment, are distillation, electrolysis, electrolysis combined with steam/H2 exchange, or dual temperature exchange, e.g. water/water, steam/H2, and water/H2S. Pulverized and/or lump, hard or soft coal, coke, or peat, may be gasified at atmospheric, or elevated, e.g. above 5 kg./sq. cm., pressure and 800 DEG -1,300 DEG C. in the presence of O2, or air, and, preferably, of steam.
