Abstract
A device for combating insects, in particular flies consists of a porous small sheet or strip, at least 10 sq. cm. in area, of brownish to blueish red material e.g. cardboard felt or rubber foam which is or becomes dark on moistening and which contains a substance which is at least partly water-soluble and is toxic to flies on being sucked up by them, and a foodstuff e.g. sugar and crude products containing sugar such as unrefined sugar or molasses products containing glucose and/or fructose such as starch syrup, honey or invert sugar and other additives if desired e.g. polyhydroxy compounds such as glycerine ionogenic or non-ionogenic substances and fatty acids such as oleic acid and contact poisons, which material must have a surface of at least 10 sq. cm. Specified toxic substances are 3-methyl-pyrazolyl-(5)-dimethyl carbamate, also mixed with 1-dimethyl carbamyl-3-methyl-pyrazolyl-(5)-dimethyl carbamate, 1-isopropyl-3-methyl-pyrazolyl-(5)-dimethyl carbamate and other 1-alkyl-, 1-alkenyl- or 1-alkoxyalkyl-3-methyl-pyrazolyl-(5)-dimethyl carbamates; derivatives of phosphoric acids and phosphonic acids such as, 0-(2.2-dichlorovinyl)-0.0-dimethyl phosphate or a -hydroxy-b .b .b .-trichlorethyl phosphonic acid dimethyl ester, as well as inorganic stomach poisons such as sodium arsenite or mercuric chloride. Preferably the device is printed with black spots on a dark red background representing flies. The device is produced by impregnating in any desired sequence the sheets or strips of porous material with a solution or emulsion of one substance or of mixtures of several substances which is or are at least partly soluble in water and is or are toxic to insects on being sucked up by them, and with the foodstuff for insects and if desired with hygroscopic and capillary active substances and colouring thereafter the impregnated sheets or strips with a brownish to bluish red colour which becomes dark at least upon moistening. Alternatively the sheets or strips may be first coloured before impregnation as above.ALSO:A device for combating insects, in particular flies consists of a porous small sheet or strip, at least 10 sq. cm. in area, of brownish to blueish red material, e.g. carboard, felt or rubber foam which is or becomes dark on moistening and which contains a substance which is at least partly water-soluble and is toxic to flies on being sucked up by them, and a foodstuff, e.g. sugar and crude products containing sugar such as unrefined sugar or molasses, products containing glucose and/or fructose such as starch syrup, honey or invert sugar and other additives if desired, e.g. polyhydroxy compounds such as glycerine, ionogenic or non-ionogenic substances and fatty acids such as oleic acid and contact poisons. Alternatively, the sheets or strips may be first coloured before impregnating as above.
