Abstract
900,927. Sheet-delivery apparatus. JAGENBERG-WERKE A.G. Feb. 20, 1959 [March 13, 1958], No. 5906/59. Class 100 (1). [Also in Groups XXXVI, XL (b) and XL (c)] In a method of indicating or rejecting concealed joints or faults in multi-layer webs of paper or the like, the joints or faults are previously provided with a marking arranged to generate a signal when the sheets are moved past a detector. In Fig. 1, webs of paper from a number of rolls 1 are assembled together by rollers 2 before being cut into individual stacks by rotating cutter drums 4. The stacks are passed by belts 5, 6 into a container 7. When a fault or joint in any one web passes the sensing head 8, an electrical impulse is generated to energize the electromagnet 12 which moves the deflector blade 9 so that the defective stack is deposited in container 13. Joints or faults in each paper roll 1 are previously marked with a piece of adhesive metal foil or other metallizing. The two sides of the sensing head 8 may take the form of plates of a charged capacitor so that a variation in voltage in an amplifying circuit is produced when such a fault passes the head. Alternatively, the paper webs may pass between the primary and secondary windings of a transformer fed with high-frequency alternating voltage. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement for use with sheets in which the joints or faults have previously been rendered ferromagnetic. When such a fault passes the polepieces of the electromagnet 20, a voltage pulse is induced in the coil 21 which, after amplification, can energize the electromagnet 12. In another arrangement, the change in absorption of α- and #-rays, #-rays or X-rays is detected by a Geiger counter and converted into the required electrical impulse. Alternatively, the joints or marked faults may be indicated by the use of radioactive isotopes. In another arrangement, the variation in the absorption or reflection of sound waves is utilized.
