Abstract

1344986 Counting apparatus DE LA RUE INSTRUMENTS Ltd 28 May 1971 [4 June 1970] 26940/70 Heading G4D [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for discriminating between moving translucent sheets in respect of their opacity, comprises means for conveying them in spaced relationship between a light source L 1 , Fig. 2, and a photo-cell PE 1 and a pair of differential amplifiers I, II to which the photo-cell output is applied, the differential amplifier I being arranged to produce a positive output signal when the optical attenuation by a sheet exceeds a predetermined level and the amplifier II producing a positive output when a higher level is exceeded. The amplifier outputs may be fed to separate counters, or the arrangement may be incorporated in a machine for counting and examining banknotes in which the length of the note is measured by using the lower level detector to gate mechanically generated clock pulses to a counter, the counter having three outputs which are activated for different note lengths so that folded notes showing extra opacity are rejected, an alarm is given in respect of partially overlapping and abutting notes, and normal and overlapping notes are counted, the former creating an erroneous count which is indicated by a lamp. The normal pulse count is inhibited by long notes of high opacity and actuation of the reject mechanism is permitted only if the length count shows that the leading edge has not passed the point of reject interception. The output from photo-cell PE1, Fig. 2, is applied to differential amplifiers I, II, through a linear amplifier 50 and a pair of R.C. networks in which the capacitors C1 are charged by the photo-cell output during the gaps between sheets, to provide a reference against which the following attenuated sheet signal is compared. The differential amplifiers include positive feedback whereby the output in the absence of a note is a maximum negative. A known banknote feeding transporting and defleeting mechanism is described with reference to Fig. 1 (not shown).
