Abstract
In a process for preparing a lactam by the Beckmann rearrangement of a moist cycloalkanone oxime in the presence of oleum, the oxime is dissolved in a substantially inert solvent which forms the upper layer of a system comprising oleum and the solvent, said solvent being immiscible with oleum and immiscible or at most partially miscible with water, whereby the rearrangement occurs at the interface between the solvent and the oleum. Suitable solvents include paraffins, cycloparaffins and halogenated hydrocarbons. The lactam may be recovered from the oleum layer. The process may be operated batchwise or continuously. Caprolactam, valerolactam and capryl lactam are prepared in examples.
