In torque measuring apparatus in which two A.C. generators are spaced apart along a shaft, each generator comprises a rotor fixedly mounted on the shaft and having a ring of teeth coaxial with the shaft, each tooth extending parallel to the shaft axis, and a magnetic stator, one pole of which is disposed radially outward and another pole of which is disposed radially inward with respect to the ring of teeth, the A.C. voltages produced in pick-up windings on the stators being used in known manner to determine the torque on the shaft. Fig. 6 shows one tooth 1a of a ring of teeth disposed around the periphery of a rotor 1, and a stator 2 comprising polepieces 5, which are narrow in the direction parallel to the rotor axis, D.C. energized windings L2 (unless the stator is a permanent magnet) and output windings L1. The stator is formed in two pieces connected by a bolt 4 which has a right-hand thread on its upper half and a left-hand thread on its lower half, so that rotation of the bolt results in a common increase or decrease in the air-gaps S1 S2. In a modification (not shown), the stator is made in one piece having a single energized winding L2; the outputs of windings L1 are added, thus compensating for any variation in the values of S1, S2. The stators may be angularly adjustable about the rotor axes for zero-setting. In Fig. 4, the torsional effect of a torque on a main shaft 9 is amplified for measuring purposes by mounting the generators 10 on a second shaft 8 parallel to the main shaft and coupled to it by gear-wheels 6 on the main shaft meshing with pinions 7 on the second shaft. In a modification, the pinions 7 constitute the rotors of the generators and are provided with rings of teeth which co-operate with the stators in addition to their radial gear teeth.
