Abstract

899,283. Valves. SEETRU Ltd. Oct. 30 1958 [Oct. 30, 1957], No. 33802/57. Class 135. A lift valve has a closure member having a conical closure surface 23 cooperating with a complementary conical seat 6 the surface 23 being formed on a shoulder which provides an abutment against which is located a sealing ring 19 of rubber or rubber-like material or a synthetic plastic material and of P section comprising a body portion 35 and an integral skirt or lip portion 36 the body portion 35 of the ring bearing on the seat when the conical closure surface makes contact therewith to close the valve. The ring is on that side of the conical closure surface facing the inlet 2 of the valve and holes 21 from the base of a groove or recess formed partly by the shoulder, and which are covered by the lip 20, communicate with a space 22 on the downstream side of the closure member, so that the fluid pressure tends to maintain the ring in place between the open and closed positions. The upstream ends of the holes 21 may be connected together by a shallow channel in the base of the groove or recess. In a modification, wherein the ring is of material not highly elastic, this ring is assembled, without stretching, against a shoulder of the closure member and provided with a keeper plate. In other modifications, corresponding to the inlet 2 being made the outlet of the valve, the positions of the conical closure surface and the sealing ring are reversed, and in a further modification the groove or recess has its base parallel to the axis of the valve.
